Improper FractionsAn improper fraction is one whose numerator is larger than the denominator (like 5/4). Improper fractions can be written as a mixed number, a number plus a fraction (for example, 5/4 = 1 1/4).

Improper FractionsOne way to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number is to divide the fraction's numerator by its denominator. The integer part of the division answer is the integer part of the mixed number. The remainder of the division problem is the numerator of the resulting fraction (the denominator is the same as the original denomintor).
Improper FractionsAnother way of looking at it is to again divide the fraction's numerator by its denominator and then convert the decimal portion of the answer to a fraction.
